Apple’s new Haswell-powered MacBook Airs produced SSD read and write speeds so fast in benchtests by French site MacBidouille that they initially thought it must have been a bug in their test software. A second run in different software revealed that, no, the latest Airs really do offer read & write speeds higher than the maximum possible with SATA 3. The secret, noted by AnandTech in its own tests, is that Apple is using the same PCIe-based SSDs in the latest MacBook Air as they announced for the new Mac Pro … PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is the standard already used in the ExpressCard slot used in some laptops, and offers a direct link to the motherboard without the bottleneck created by a SATA interface (SATA 3 tops out at 600MB/s)....

Now, YouTuber Matti Haapoja has put the iPhone 11 Pro to the test against a $7,500 DSLR camera. In the below video, Haapoja compares the iPhone 11 Pro to the Canon 1DX Mark II. Earlier this week, a dispute emerged between NBCUniversal and theater chains such as AMC after NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell made optimistic comments on the digital-only release of Trolls World Tour. Now, Shell is trying to clarify his comments to appease the theater industry, while also remaining optimistic about premium video on demand. “The results for Trolls World Tour have exceeded our expectations and demonstrated the viability of PVOD,” Shell said earlier this week in an interview with The Wall Street Journal....

Today, Apple unveiled its new Apple TV 4K. Almost four years after its original release, the company introduced the new set-top-box with the A12 chip, a new Siri Remote, and HDMI 2.1 support for a better 4K HDR experience. With the new Apple TV 4K using HDMI 2.1, it’s unclear why Apple hasn’t yet implemented the 120Hz refresh rate support. During the presentation, the company explored how the new set-top-box improved the 4K HDR experience but without getting too much into specs....

We reported last fall that a revamped Apple TV set-top-box is in the works, and then we learned earlier this year that the new box would likely be introduced in the first half of 2014. Sources said at the time that the new model would be redesigned (at least on the inside) and would sport new content (perhaps a true App Store or gaming functionality). Since that time, sources indicated that internal prototypes for the new device include AirPort Express-like functionality, a form of enhanced iOS gaming integration, and a TV tuner component for connecting to existing cable setups....

The schematic shared on Twitter by Sonny Dickson features a cut out on the backside presumably used for Touch ID with dimensions matching schematics leaked earlier by a different source. The newly leaked illustration (seen below) shows new dimensions for width and height that align with previously leaked dimensions as well....

In January, following a meeting with Samsung Storage solutions at CES 2012, we told you that Apple’s next-gen MacBook Air would likely make the switch to the speedier 830 series SSDs from Samsung alongside an update to Ivy Bridge. This was of course before we revealed some major changes coming to Apple’s new MacBook and iMac lineups. In addition to Retina displays for almost the entire new lineup, the new ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook Pro will be getting a complete redesign, losing the optical drive, and bringing it closer to to the thin design of current Airs....

Apple’s Sept. 9 iPhone event may be just around the corner, but the leaks continue to flow. Custom iPhone creators Feld & Volk have shared a set of photos with Sonny Dickson that depict what is claimed to be the 4.7-inch iPhone 6’s logic board with an A8 processor and NFC chip in tow… There’s no way to tell if these claims are legitimate, but as shown in the image above, the chip labeled with “NSD425” is said to be the NFC module from NXP....

Update: These look to be fake… Leading up to Apple’s rumored October iPad event, Youtube user UnboxTherapy has posted what he claims to be the next generation Smart Cover for the upcoming iPad 5. Although design-wise, the cover appears to be similar to the current 9.7″ iPad Smart Covers, upon closer inspection, the dimensions are smaller than that of the current cover, and fit perfectly onto leaked parts from the iPad 5, which, like the iPad mini, sheds its large bezel in favor of a much thinner edge, to make the device more comfortable to hold....

Netflix is enjoying its final week of calm before the (supposed) biggest threat in the streaming world arrives: Disney+. Apple released the first tvOS 9.1 beta to developers earlier this week, but it lacked the addition of one major feature many have been calling for: folder support on the homepage. Now, well-known developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that out of the box, the tvOS user interface features “pretty complete” folder support… Smith dug deeper into the tvOS 9.0 build and was even able to hack folders into working. He has since been playing around with it and has shared images of the feature on Twitter....

Apple appears to be planning to further expand its data center presence in Northern Nevada according to a newly surfaced building permit. An application that was filed and withdrawn on February 2 points to a $50 million data center codenamed Project Isabel with Apple listed as the client. According to the permit (via Buildzoom), Project Isabel is a 372,893 square foot data center with an administration building, parking garage, and generator yard valued at $50,720,906....

That’s another 15,000 applications since Apple last confirmed how many software titles it is making available through the store, and confirms the velocity with which developers are throwing titles at the company’s next-gen mobile devices. As reported by AppShopper, there were 101,561 approved apps, though availability of these varies by territory and just 92,870 of them are currently available through the App Store....
