Following Apple’s Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook announcing a record weekend for the new iPad, AT&T just issued a statement confirming “a new single-day record” for both sales and activations for the launch of the new device. Apple never released official sales numbers for the launch of the iPad 2, but it was estimated to have sold between 500,000 and a million units on its début weekend. Apex Legends community manager and Respawn Entertainment employee Jayfresh_Respawn recently revealed that the next target for bans would be players exploiting “piggy-backing,” but some community members are worried that the new practice could incidentally target people who are innocent. Apex Legends cheating issues have plagued the game since its launch back in February, but Respawn has been taking proactive steps in eliminating the most egregious practices and has reported strong progress in that regard....

NBCUniversal is officially launching its Peacock streaming service for free to Comcast customers this week. The launch to existing Comcast customers comes ahead of a broader public rollout on July 15. Starting tomorrow, people who subscribe to Comcast Xfinity or Flex TV services will get free access to Peacock Premium. This includes “more than 15,000 hours of content,” as well as free access to early to late night shows The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers....

Netflix of course began with the mission statement of allowing customers to choose from a large catalog of movies and TV shows on DVD, then have their choices shipped to their home through the mail. When the customer finishes with the current selection, they can send it back and receive the next title in their queue. With so much focus currently on streaming, the above concept already seems a bit like an antiquated idea, but that hasn’t stopped over 4 million people from continuing to make use of Netflix’s physical DVD and Blu-ray offerings....

Netflix may lose The Office. At one point not so long ago, the subscription-streaming concept was still just barely getting off the ground. Without any immediate plans to completely alter the face of home entertainment, Netflix went from a mail order DVD service to the go-to platform for streaming content directly into one’s home. As the popularity of Netflix grew, and people started to realize that the service was offering quite the bang for the buck, other providers began to materialize, eager to challenge Netflix at its own game....

A new trailer is here for Atomic Blonde, the upcoming spy/assassin thriller starring Charlize Theron and directed by John Wick co-helmsman David Leitch. The movie premiered at the 2017 SXSW film festival earlier this year after going through a title change; having originally been named after its comic book source material, e.g. writer Antony Johnston and illustrator Sam Hart’s The Coldest City. Universal Pictures debuted the first Atomic Blonde red band trailer around that same time, formally kicking off the movie’s marketing campaign in the process....

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint takes place in the archipelago of the Auroa islands, and although the main setting is already bigger than the massive Wildlands rendition of Bolivia, the development team is already hard at work on adding a new Breakpoint island to the game post-launch. The news comes from Matthew Tomkinson, User Experience and Realization Director on the game. Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is a reimagining of the series that will combine everything fans enjoyed about Wildlands with some new survival elements meant to throw veterans off....

After posting initial benchmark data yesterday for the new Retina MacBook Pro’s SSD and USB 3.0, AnandTech published a longer analysis today about the notebook’s display. The report first took a closer look at the new resolution preferences for Retina MBP users and described the advantages of the different scaling options displayed in the gallery above: As illustrated in the images above showing benchmark data, the review found greatly improved viewing angles, black levels, and contrast when compared to the previous generation high-res MacBook Pro model....

Apple has updated its System Status page to show that 20% of users have been unable to make purchases since 6am this morning. Sadly, this outage is starting to become the norm as just last week the iTunes Store and other iCloud services were experiencing issues for certain users. In addition, Apple released new versions of iOS 7, iTunes 11, and iTunes 11.1 beta to fix issues with iTunes in the Cloud that would not display purchases properly for some users....

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg would be in jail now under the terms of a proposed new privacy law which would hold company execs personally responsible for their company’s failings. Under the proposed Mind Your Business Act, senior company executives could go to prison for anything up to 20 years… CNET reports that the bill has been put forward by Senator Ron Wyden, a longtime supporter of stronger privacy protections. That maximum 4% fine would match Europe’s gold-standard privacy law, GDPR....

Thefts of Apple products made up 18 percent of all grand larcenies in New York City last year, reports the WSJ, citing NYPD figures. Of the 47,000 grand larcenies occuring in the city last year, 8,465 involved Apple products. Only about 20 percent of grand larceny reports result in an arrest, and of those charged, almost two-thirds result in either a dismissal or a plea-bargain to a lesser charge. Police said that solving the problem was made harder by the attitudes of many victims, who simply want to file a report but not look through mugbooks to try to identify the thief....
