Apple today has quietly released its latest diversity numbers, reflecting of the company as of July of this year. The numbers show that Apple is continuing its push towards diversity in the workplace, but that executive and upper management positions are still largely filled by white males… In the report, Apple outlines that 73 of its top 107 executives are white males. The remaining spots are filled as follows: 20 females, 15 of whom are white 2 Hispanic or latino employees (up from 1 last year) 14 Asian employees (up from 12 last year) 3 black or African-American employees Going further down the ladder, first and middle manager positions are held predominantly by white males....

The next-generation USB “Type C” standard that became available to manufacturers last month will also offer a “DisplayPort Alternate Mode”, enabling the new USB cables to “deliver full DisplayPort audio/video (A/V) performance, driving monitor resolutions of 4K and beyond, SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1) data and up to 100 watts of power–over a single cable.” That means new USB cables that adopt the new slimmer Type-3 standard can essentially also work as a full-fledged DisplayPort cable....

Popular email app Newton is out with two new builds for desktop today including a dedicated version for Apple Silicon as well as Linux. Newton says the new M1 Macs are “revolutionary,” prompting it to develop and launch the new version to support them. Newton shared the news in a blog post today, focusing a bit more on the Linux release but also highlighting the leap forward Apple has made with the first M1 Macs....

The problem seems to affect all models of the new device with both users of the 4G LTE model and the Wi-Fi-only model experiencing poor Wi-Fi reception. Many forum posters compared Wi-Fi reception with their other iOS devices and MacBooks on the same network: One user reports only receiving good reception within six feet of a router while another claims to have had issues with four different third-generation iPads....

New Saturday Night Live cast member Shane Gillis responds to backlash about accusations of racism. On Sept. 12, the comedian officially joined NBC’s iconic sketch comedy series, which prompted reports about his past. In addition to hiring Gillis, Saturday Night Live also announced Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang as new cast members. Both comedians further diversify the popular series, and fans celebrated the announcement online, just two weeks after Leslie Jones officially left the show....

That did not take long. Just hours after today’s launch of the new iPad, jailbreaker MuscleNerd posted (via iFans) screenshots of what he claimed is a jailbroken third-generation iPad. Do not get too excited, because MuscleNerd warned there is “still lots of work to do.” Therefore, the jailbreak is far from prime time. There is “No ETA,” but he provided screenshots of Cydia running for further proof that it is on the way....

New photos from the San Jose Mercury News today reveal additional details about Apple’s new campus, slated to be completed sometime in either 2015 or 2016. A scale model of the planned building was shown to The Mercury News by Apple’s CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, located at an office on the 175-acre site of Apple’s planned campus. According to Oppenheimer: As Apple prepares for a final vote before the Cupertino City Council on the development of the campus on October 15th, final plans and details are coming together and are mostly in place....

With watchOS 8, Apple has announced some new features for Apple Watch users, including a new Mindfulness app, photo sharing, and more. Usually, every new watchOS comes with new watch faces, but this year, Apple has only shown one new watch face — Portraits. Apple is opening three new retail stores this weekend including one new store near Venice, Italy and two stores in the US. We originally reported in June that the new stores were coming alongside others in China, Italy and the US as new retail chief Angela Ahrendts implements organizational restructuring for Apple retail. Apple has now announced the upcoming grand openings on its website for three of the stores opening this Saturday....
