NBC debuts a behind the scenes photo of US Ski Team athlete Mikaela Shiffrin in Disney/Marvel inspired Captain Marvel team suits. Every four years, the world watches as athletes from hundreds of countries defy gravity in the Winter Olympics. From complex twists and axles in figure skating to the skeleton or ski jumping, these athletes perform moves that appear super human to us mere mortals. As such, it seemed fitting when Disney/Marvel announced they were teaming up with US Ski Team sponsor, Spyder, for uniforms that promote the USA and show these athletes for the super humans they are.

The two year deal has female ski team members wearing uniforms inspired by Captain Marvel while their male counterparts will don Captain America themed suits. Concept art of the uniforms was released in February, and the teams have been dressing like the Marvel heroes since the Alpine World Championships were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland earlier this year.

As TV sponsor NBC gears up for their upcoming promo spots, they’ve released a teaser featuring athlete Mikaela Shiffrin. The US Ski Team member, who recently won her fourth title in World Cup Slalom, has been wearing (and winning in) the Captain Marvel inspired suit all season. The network teased their upcoming slate via Twitter, saying these athletes have their “Game. Face. ON.”

While these suits are more recognizable, this isn’t the first time comics and athletes have come together in such a partnership. Valiant Entertainment partnered with the US Luge Team for the 2012 Winter Olympics in Sochi; and NASCAR had a similar partnership with DC Comics in 2014 that saw Dale Earnhardt Jr. behind the wheel of a Superman inspired car.

In a press release, Marvel’s Senior VP of Licensing, Paul Gitter, stated the company was “looking forward to outfitting the U.S. Ski Team with this high-quality gear so they can showcase their heroic style just like a Marvel Super Hero.” Spyder says the uniforms contain “proprietary technology” but they are excited about the two year deal with Disney and their contract through 2020 to outfit the US SKi Team.

Captain Marvel is expected to be filming during the Winter Olympics and will hit theaters March 8, 2019; just as the Disney/Spyder partnership ends. The licensing is a great way to get folks familiar with seeing the suit as female athletes fly down ski slopes and through the air. As for Captain Marvel herself? Brie Larson definitely approves:

The 2018 Winter Olympics will be hosted in PyeongChang, South Korea, and will be airing on NBC and their affiliate stations from February 9 - 25th, 2018.
