The Guardians of the Galaxy movies made one version of Nebula famous, but the tortured and terrifying daughter of Thanos is about to have her own story told in the pages of her own comic miniseries. And from the looks of it, Nebula will be changing more than her hairstyle when the series begins this February.

Even introducing Nebula as a clear villain, the Marvel movies couldn’t help but offer understanding and empathy, to the point that audiences might be split on whether Nebula is a hero or villain at all. That same question will be at the heart of her new miniseries from writer Vita Ayala and artist Claire Roe. Their version of the cosmic killer has a new mission of her own, taking her up against deadly opponents. But if fans were concerned about her losing her life, they should probably start worrying about Nebula losing her memories instead.

Thanks to the Marvel solicitations for new comics releasing this March, fans can now get their first look at Nebula’s new design, as rendered by cover artist Jen Bartel. Is the makeover a sign that Nebula has changed without the burden of her painful memories? Or is she just deciding that hair has its advantages? All we know is it’s a terrific look. See for yourselves:

If the image gives off a rebellious energy, that’s perfectly by design. As Ayala explained to Refinery29, that outlaw spirit is what she’s after, looking to differentiate Nebula from the black and white villains and heroes comic fans might be used to:

I think that it’s very similar to Xena back in the day, but I wanted to show that she’s like the Callisto of the Marvel Universe. She goes through all this gnarly stuff, and you can come out real hard because of it. I want to soften some of her edges, because I think that there is something interesting to say about what understanding someone’s motivations does to your feelings of empathy towards them.

Remember that feeling that you got when you first saw Han Solo be an accidental badass? That’s what I want. I want for kids reading this, or teenagers or even adults, to read this and go, Whoa, that’s so cool. I want people, especially little femme people who are angry and who are going through things, to see this character and go, Oh, that’s a thing that other people feel, and I’m a valid person, but also for them to go, All right, I should probably do better than trying to destroy the world, though.
