This weekend, Netflix is bringing a new documentary series, a drama movie, and a highly anticipated horror series. While the world of streaming prepares for the arrival of even more subscription services this year, life at Netflix continues its course quite smoothly. The platform keeps adding new content every week and there’s always something for all tastes and ages – and this week is no exception.
Last week, Netflix added a lot of licensed content, as it does on the first day of every month. Among those new arrivals are Alfonso Cuaron’s A Little Princess, the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and the acclaimed drama The Pianist. As for original content, Netflix brought its first fashion design competition series with Next in Fashion, the miniseries The Stranger, BoJack Horseman’s final episodes, and the Norwegian series Ragnarok. On the licensed content front, this week is taking a break from big movies and instead will be all about TV series, with season 8 of Arrow and Better Call Saul season 4.
Netflix’s original content this week, on the other hand, includes both movies and TV series after weeks of mostly bringing TV shows. The Pharmacist
The Pharmacist is a true crime, limited documentary series that follows Dan Schneider, a pharmacist in Poydras, Louisiana, whose son was killed in a drug-related shooting in New Orleans in 1999. Schneider is now looking to identify his son’s killer, and his search led to this gathering evidence against a “pill mill” doctor in New Orleans. Netflix’s The Pharmacist offers a deeper and different look at the opioid crisis and the companies behind it.
Horse Girl
Netflix’s Horse Girl is a drama film directed by Jeff Baena (Life After Beth), from a screenplay by Baena and Alison Brie. The story centers on Sarah (Brie), a socially awkward woman who’s very into arts and crafts, horses, and supernatural crime shows, and finds her increasingly lucid dreams trickling into her waking life. Also starring are Debby Ryan, John Reynolds, Molly Shannon, Jay Duplass, and Paul Reiser. Horse Girl is a very personal project to Brie as she took inspiration from her family’s history with mental illness, so you might want to check this one out on Netflix this weekend, as it promises to be a very emotional ride.
Locke & Key
A fantasy horror series, Locke & Key is based on the comic book series of the same name by Joe Hill. It follows three siblings – Bode, Tyler, and Kinsey – who move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts. There they find that the house has magical keys that give them many powers and abilities, but there’s also a devious demon that wants the keys, and won’t stop until it gets them. Locke & Key was originally going to be released by Hulu, but after they passed on the pilot, Netflix rescued the project and it’s now available to watch.
