Netflix is still busy expanding its catalogue every week with new seasons of popular series and new content as well, and this weekend has a bit of everything for everyone. The streaming platform seems to be unaffected by the emergence of other subscription services (for now, at least), and continues producing original content as well as housing other fan-favorite titles.
September 2019 has been an interesting month when it comes to Netflix releases and new additions, with films like American Psycho, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King being added to its list, as well as some highly anticipated releases like Elite’s season 2. This month has already had its dose of Netflix Originals with Unbelievable and Tall Girl, and there are still more to come. Some weeks are busier than others, and the weekend of September 20, 2019, is a busy one at Netflix, with documentaries, animated shows, crime series, and more.
Although weekends are for relaxing and, in many cases, catching up with TV shows and new releases, sometimes two days are just not enough to take a look at everything. That said, here’s a selection of the best TV shows and series for this weekend on Netflix.
The Last Kids On Earth
Based on the children’s book series of the same name and written by Max Brallier, The Last Kids On Earth follows 13-year-old Jack Sullivan (Nick Wolfhard), an orphan with a pretty ordinary life until the apocalypse hits, and with it come zombies and other monsters destroying everything they find. Jack teams up with his friends and classmates to fight these creatures and stay alive (of course!), but with a good dose of fun.
The Last Kids On Earth may be about the apocalypse, zombies, and monsters, but it still puts comedy over horror, making it a family-friendly option. Sadly, season 1 is only one episode long, but season 2 promises to have 10 episodes. For now, this is a good primer.
Between Two Ferns: The Movie
Funny or Die’s web series Between Two Ferns, hosted by Zach Galifianakis, got its own film, following the same comedy style that made the series so popular. This time, Galifianakis will go on a road trip to complete a series of interviews with many celebrities, including Matthew McConaughey, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brie Larson, Jon Hamm, and more. The film was directed by Scott Aukerman and produced by Funny or Die, so you can be sure that it will keep the series’ essence.
Criminal
The perfect option for those who enjoy crime shows, Criminal is a police procedural anthology series set across four countries (France, Spain, Germany, UK) and filmed in local languages, with three episodes per country. Described as a “cat-and-mouse drama”, the series focuses on the “intense mental conflict between detectives and suspects”. Criminal UK stars David Tennant, Hayley Atwell, Clare-Hope Ashitey, and Youssef Kerkour; the Spanish episodes have Emma Suárez, Jorge Bosch, and Álvaro Cervantes; Germany’s episodes star Eva Meckbach, Sylvester Groth, and Florence Kasumba; and France features Margot Bancilhon, Laurent Lucas, and Stéphane Jobert.
Disenchantment (Part 2)
The second part of Matt Groening’s fantasy sitcom Disenchantment will finally be available this weekend after a year-long wait. The series is set in the medieval fantasy kingdom of Dreamland, following rebellious, alcoholic princess Bean who wants to break away from her royal duties with the help of her elf companion, Elfo, and her “personal demon”, Luci.
At the end of Part 1, everyone in Dreamland (except Zøg and Derek) were turned into stone, Luci was kidnapped, and Elfo’s body washed up on a beach, and was picked up by mysterious figures. Part 2 will consist of ten episodes and will set the ground for season 2, expected to be released in 2020 in two parts, just like season 1.
Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates
Here’s a good option for those who enjoy documentaries. Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates is a three-part documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth), which as the title says, explores the mind and motivations of Microsoft’s former CEO, Bill Gates. The documentary follows the life of this business magnate and humanitarian as “he pursues solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems”. There might be some secrets and life lessons to be learned in this series, so it’s worth the watch.
