Netflix releases an official The Witcher map with a detailed timeline of the show’s events. The Witcher TV show is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and short stories of the same name that follow the travels and travails of Geralt of Rivia, a brutish monster hunter. Sapkowski’s stories were also adapted into the wildly popular The Witcher video games, made by Polish developer CD Projekt Red.

Although season one of The Witcher received mixed reviews upon release, it quickly became one of the most in-demand shows on television. Netflix was clearly high on the show from the beginning, evident by the fact that they ordered season two before season one even aired. But despite Netflix’s optimism, many critics suggested that the plot was hard to follow and the setting was too expansive. In turn, fans of the show quickly made their own instructional guides to the world of The Witcher, so as to explain the intricacies of the world to those who felt they were lost in translation.

Netflix has released an official map of the unnamed continent from The Witcher in response to criticisms that say the show was too hard to follow. The map comes equipped with a timeline explaining everything from the “conjunction of the spheres” to the end of season one where Geralt meets Ciri. In total, the timeline spans a whopping 1,264 years although it is worth mentioning that the events of the first season take place in just 30 years.

By scrolling through the end of the timeline, readers will be granted a secret message in “Elder Speech” which The Witcher scholars have translated to “When something ends, something begins.” This quote seems to be in reference to the pervading theme of the acceptance of fate that Geralt struggled with throughout season one. The map is also fully interactive with weather effects and graphics accompanying key moments in the timeline of the world.

By no means did Netflix have to put out a map and timeline for The Witcher, nor did they have to do so with such attention to detail, but alas, they did and the end result is exceedingly impressive. It’s hard not to think that Netflix plans on making The Witcher its next flagship show, as it’s not often that a network gets the rights to a widely popular IP and a star in Henry Cavill who truly loves playing the lead. Fans won’t have to wait too long either for season two of The Witcher, as Cavill says pre-production starts very soon.
