Ryan Murphy sets a September premiere date for The Politician. The comedy series marks the showrunner’s first original project with Netflix. The Politician will star Ben Platt, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Jessica Lange, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Over the past 20 years, Murphy has created, produced, and directed numerous acclaimed TV series. From 1999 to 2001, Murphy’s teenage dramedy Popular aired for two seasons on The WB, and has since been recognized as a cult TV classic. Murphy also created the FX medical drama Nip/Tuck, which preceded two culture-changing TV series. For Fox, Murphy developed the musical drama Glee with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, and he reunited with the former to create FX’s American Horror Story. The trio also created the comedy horror series Scream Queens, and they will team up once again for Netflix’s The Politician. To date, Murphy has won six Emmy Awards and been nominated for a total of 28. In 2018, he produced FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, which won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series.

Per Netflix, The Politician will premiere on September 27. The comedy series features Platt as Payton Hobart, a wealthy Santa Barbara resident with political aspirations. In July 2018, Deutch and Boynton were cast as the female leads. Deutch is the daughter of actress Lea Thompson and the star of Netflix’s 2018 hit Set It Up. Last year, Boynton co-starred in Bohemian Rhapsody, which ultimately won four Academy Awards. The rest of The Politician’s season 1 regulars include the aforementioned Paltrow and Lange, along with Bob Balaban, David Corenswet, Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Theo Germaine, Rahne Jones, and  Benjamin Barrett. Last December, Lange officially joined The Politician’s cast, reuniting her once again with Murphy. Over the past decade, Lange has starred in five different seasons of American Horror Story, and she starred as Joan Crawford in Murphy’s 2017 FX series Feud. Throughout her acclaimed acting career, Lange has won two Academy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, one Tony Award and five Golden Globe Awards.

In 2015, Netflix premiered their first two original comedy series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Grace and Frankie, both of which became hits. This past year, Netflix has been on a roll with comedy series like Maniac, The Kominsky Method, Sex Education, and Russian Doll. With Ryan Murphy now in the mix, The Politician may set a new standard for future comedy series, and further establish the streaming service as an elite provider of accessible entertainment.
