Netflix’s The Two Popes cast is led by two iconic actors, who are joined by an impressive list of supporting actors. Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and written by Anthony McCarten (Bohemian Rhapsody), the Netflix drama features two legendary actors as historical Vatican figures.

The Two Popes explores the friendship between Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. As the Catholic Church experiences scandal after scandal, the head of the Vatican muses about the future, and if he’s making the right decisions. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio offers thoughtful perspectives on the matter, and heavily influences Pope Benedict XVI as he decides whether to continue his papacy or gracefully step down.

The Two Popes cast is headlined by Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. They lead an awards season contender that’s full of versatile supporting performers, all of whom aren’t necessarily familiar faces in pop culture. Here’s a complete rundown of Netflix’s The Two Popes cast.

Anthony Hopkins As Pope Benedict XVI

The Two Popes focuses on the 2013 resignation of 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI, who began his papacy in 2005. Pope Benedict XVI was the first head of the Catholic Church to step down in approximately 600 years. In pop culture, Anthony Hopkins is best known as serial killer Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs, for which he won an Academy Award. In recent years, he’s portrayed Dr. Robert Ford in HBO’s Westworld. Hopkins also starred as Odin in the MCU’s Thor films.

Jonathan Pryce As Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio

In The Two Popes, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio - a native of Argentina - converses with Pope Benedict XVI about life and the direction of the Catholic Church. Bergoglio is now Pope Francis. Many HBO subscribers know Jonathan Pryce as the High Sparrow from Game of Thrones. But he’s perhaps best known for his roles in Tomorrow Never Dies, Brazil, and the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
