Netflix’s The Witcher has quickly become one of the streaming service’s most talked-about series. From the brilliant performances of the actors to the interesting, non-linear storytelling, this show has audiences absolutely mesmerized.
The Witcher follows the titular character, also known as Geralt of Rivia, as he travels around a medieval fantasy world fighting monsters for coin. These battles with monsters serve as one of the most interesting parts of the show. While their where only a handful of monsters that Geralt fought in season one, there are a plethora of additional beasts to pull from the source material that fans are all dying to see. Here are ten creatures we desperately hope to see Geralt battle.
Griffin
One of the first enemies you face in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a griffin. A fearsome monster from Witcher lore, the Griffin is not to be trifled with. With the body of a lion and the head/wings of an eagle, this creature is known for its brutal torture of its prey.
Not only do Griffins prey upon farm animals such as cows and sheep, but they are also known to hunt down humans as well. Seeing Geralt fight one of these beasts would make for quite an incredible cinematic experience.
Werewolf
Every fantasy fan is familiar with the werewolf. In the world of The Witcher, the only way to become a werewolf is either through a curse or having that cursed passed down to you through your family.
Geralt has fought plenty of werewolves in both video games and books. These monsters are some of his most formidable foes and would be easy to showcase in live-action. Hopefully, we get to see some in future seasons.
Vampires
The only classic fantasy monsters more popular than werewolves are vampires. Like their werewolf counterparts, vampires of The Witcher are quite different from their classic interpretations.
Vampires in this world are a race of intelligent beings. Some of them are good, and some of them are bad. All the traditional vampire weaknesses from fairytales (stakes, garlic, holy water, etc) do not work on them. Geralt versus a group of villainess vampires would make for a fun fight.
Bruxae
Vampires come in all shapes and sizes. One of the more dangerous forms of vampires is the bruxae. More often female, these creatures have long claws, sharp teeth and a dangerous lust for human blood.
Although similar in appearance to the striga that we saw in season one, this monster will set itself apart with its vampiric nature. Geralt has had many vicious battles with these creatures. If the showrunners have any sense, they will appear in the series before too long.
Fiend
Strange demonic deer looking monsters, Fiends are one of the more interesting species in Witcher lore. They are incredibly large and incredibly powerful. In the Witcher games, they are described as “walking mountains of muscles capped with horned, tooth-filled heads.”
Fans of the fantasy genre might be quite familiar with vampires, werewolves, and many other monsters Geralt has yet to face. Fiends, however, are something completely new. Having creatures as different as the fiends showcased within the Netflix series will help to set it apart from other fantasy shows it may be running up against.
Drowners
Drowners may be one of the more creepy species in Witcher lore. Hiding just beneath the surface of various bodies of water, Drowners lurk in wait, hoping to pull victims down and drown them as their namesake would suggest.
Although only mentioned in the novels, Drowners are an enemy type that appears several times within the world of the Witcher video games. They would make for good cannon fodder for Henry Cavil’s Geralt to kill off at the beginning of an episode.
Trolls
Giant, humanoid creatures, trolls are a very powerful race of enemies that often use their intimidation against humans. Like the classic interpretations of these creatures, the trolls of The Witcher often hide under bridges and demand a toll from those who pass overhead.
Some trolls used to eat humans, so witchers would often be dispatched to kill them. In later years, however, trolls have learned to live alongside humans and have given up eating them, instead of accepting tolls as payment for their maintenance of the bridges they live under. Seeing this dynamic in the show would be interesting, especially if Geralt was forced to fight one despite their new place in society.
Succubus
Much like Game of Thrones, The Witcher seems to have its fair share of naked people almost as much as it has fantasy battles. Because of this, a great monster for Geralt to fight in the show going forward would no doubt be the seductive Succubus.
These attractive demons are not very violent but do draw the energy of their victims in order to sustain their life force. After watching Geralt battle several physically imposing monsters, it would be a nice change of pace to see him take on one of these creatures.
Dragon
Although season one gives us a look at a beautiful, golden dragon, we have yet to see Geralt fight one. Instead, Geralt helped the dragon protect some dragon eggs. While this episode was without a doubt one of the highlights of the series, it would be nice to see some more dragons in the future.
More specifically, it would be nice to see Geralt actually have to defeat a dragon in combat. Such a battle would no doubt become an action highlight of the series and would give fans something to talk about for years to come.
Wild Hunt
As the main antagonists of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Wild Hunt are without a doubt the most highly anticipated enemies for Geralt to face in future seasons of the show. Although they are not likely to appear any time soon, fans will no doubt be eagerly awaiting their arrival in later seasons.
Even with their introduction to the show likely being several seasons away, we already have one mention of them in the show. During the betrothal feast in episode four, Calanthe mentions the Wild Hunt. This proves that the deadly characters are already on the showrunners’ minds, just as they are on ours.
