New images from the Arrow spinoff backdoor pilot, “Green Arrow & The Canaries,” reveal a character who may have connections to Huntress. The spinoff series will follow Oliver Queen’s daughter Mia, played by Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters), who is back in 2040 and now the Green Arrow protecting Star City. The show will be female-centric, and will bring Mia together with Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). Though it’s not confirmed, the title of the series is highly suggested to be the same as the episode title: Green Arrow and the Canaries.

All three characters were introduced in the original series, Arrow. Mia is the daughter of Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, born in 2019. When we meet her in Arrow, she’s a cage fighter who goes by the name “Blackstar.” She soon discovers more about her family, including the fact that she has a half-brother, William Clayton (Ben Lewis). Mia also becomes a vigilante and fights with the Canaries, before being pulled through time to help in the Crisis on Infinite Earths. She meets her father, and he passes on the torch of the Green Arrow to her. Drake was recruited to be Black Canary, while the Laurel Lance currently in Arrow is an ex-criminal originally from Earth-2, who stayed on Earth-1 to help Team Arrow.

All the new photos have been shared by EW, featuring the spinoff’s leading ladies: Queen (previously Smoak), Lance, and Drake. They also reveal a new character named Biance Bertinelli, played by Raigan Harris (All American, Grown-ish). Fans of Arrow will recognize her last name as the same as that of Helena Bertinelli, also known as The Huntress. No other information about her character has been revealed.

The episode “Green Arrow & The Canaries” was written by Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship, and Oscar Balderrama. Besides the title characters, another familiar face to appear is J.J. Diggle (Charlie Barnett). Arrow returns January 14 as Part 4 of Crisis on Infinite Earths. The backdoor pilot airs one week later, on January 21. The official synopsis for the episode is below.

Biance’s connection to The Huntress is unclear. She was a character featured in seasons 1 and 2 of Arrow, played by Jessica De Gouw, who became a vigilante to get revenge on her father after he had her fiancé killed. It will be interesting to see how the new spinoff, starting with this backdoor pilot, weaves in connections to the original series. There have been many Black Canary characters in Arrow, so they could easily bring some of them back or pull more from the comics. With a new setting and compelling main characters, Green Arrow and the Canaries has the potential to be a great addition to the Arrowverse.

“It’s the year 2040 in Star City and Mia Queen (Katherine McNamara) has everything she could have ever wanted. However, when Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) suddenly show up in her life again, things take a shocking turn and her perfect world is upended. Laurel and Dinah are tracking a kidnapping victim with direct ties to Mia and they need her help. Knowing it will change everything, Mia can’t help but be a hero and she, Laurel and Dinah suit up once again to save the city.”
