Brand new photos from the set of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) highlight Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s character Black Canary and her costume for the film. The cast has confirmed that principal photography has already begun on Birds of Prey, and it’s reportedly expected to wrap shooting in April 2019.

Directed by Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey will bring back Margot Robbie’s fan favorite portrayal of Harley Quinn in an all-female team-up movie. Starring alongside Robbie on the team will be Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Bell’s Black Canary. Together, these three heroes will attempt to stop Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor, and save young Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) along the way. Robbie’s take on Quinn was a clear diamond in the rough in an otherwise underwhelming Suicide Squad, and many fans are excited to see her reprise the role. Early speculation even has some fans believing that Robbie’s shift in story arc could dramatically change what’s already been laid down by the DC Extended Universe.

Now, thanks to set photos from a BirdsofPreyDC Twitter account that’s not affiliated with Warner Bros., we’re able to take a better look at Bell’s version of Black Canary. Based on what can be seen in the photos, it appears that the Black Canary costume she’s wearing – a yellow/goldish top and a dark blue suit jacket and pants – indicates that she was most likely the one wielding the bat in the previously released teaser footage. Another post from the same account shows a photo of Bell looking frustrated and possibly on the verge of yelling, but it definitely falls short of her signature ultrasonic scream.

Birds of Prey has seen a steady stream of content and sneak peeks leak from production since the beginning of the new year, building hype for a movie that won’t even wrap filming - let alone hit theaters - for months. In addition to officially debuting Quinn’s new look and offering a glimpse at Black Canary and Huntress, there have also been photos posted online that hint at a breakup between The Joker and Harley Quinn. At one point it was even believed that Robbie’s Quinn could also be losing all of her tattoos in conjunction with the split, but that no longer appears to be the case.

With almost exactly an entire year until its release, it’s clear that Birds of Prey will continue to boost expectations and add new fans along the way. The main hope at this point is that they’re careful not to give away too much ahead of time, ruining the viewing experience.
