The Call of Duty franchise has had a bit of a rough time recently, with the lukewarm reception to Black Ops 4 leading to a bit of a shake-up on what the next game in the franchise is going to deliver ranging from narrative to potential free-to-play elements.  The game’s quick development cycle has worried some fans, who have heard very little about this latest title until a recent leak which appears to confirm that it’ll be a soft reboot of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

There hasn’t been much discussion previously about what the newest Call of Duty game was going to be about. Activision has been tight-lipped, though small details have dropped here and there, like the fact that there are Ex-Naughty Dog developers helping out with the game’s narrative. Now, there’s even more fodder to speculate about.

Kotaku has reported now on a leak by YouTuber, LongSensation, who tweeted that the latest title in the franchise would be indeed called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. YouTubers like LongSensation and even athletes have had the pleasure of some hands-on time with the game, and it appears to have been corroborated by other sources that this leak about the title itself is accurate. It also appears that the game will be a reboot of the initial Modern Warfare title and that it would potentially draw on some of the more problematic source material as part of its narrative.

Judging from the fact that this new Call of Duty game is rumored now to be a soft reboot, it’ll be interesting to see what a fresh take on the old Modern Warfare material could end up looking like. Some of the franchise’s more controversial scenes and polarizing characters were drawn from the original Modern Warfare, and it remains to be seen what Activision will do with that in this day and age. On top of that, other contextual leaks appear to suggest that the game will be out in 2019 instead of 2020; this accelerated release date has not been independently confirmed by the developers, but if there was any news to show off at E3, that would be a big-ticket item.

While there’s not a whole lot currently known about the latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise aside from what it’s going to be called and the fact that it’s rumored to be a remaster, it’s likely that fans won’t be in the dark for long. Activision has just released Call of Duty: Mobile Battle Royale, and they’ll probably be wanting to get ahead of this latest leak.
