New set images from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier reveal a new look at Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Marvel Studios’ inaugural Disney+ series won’t premiere until next year, but production is already in full swing at Atlanta. Because of this, several snaps from the production have made their way online - the latest of which offers fans a fresh look on the Falcon.
Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the show will see Captain America’s best buds Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier teaming up for their own adventure. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will also see the return of some familiar faces from the franchise, such as Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo - the latter of whom will be the primary antagonist of the narrative. Meanwhile, a brand new character with the casting of Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka. U.S. Agent. Plot specifics for the show remains under wraps thus far, but writer Derek Kolstad teased that while Steve Rogers chose Sam as the next wielder of the iconic shield, assuming the role as the Star Spangled Avenger may not come automatically.
A string of new The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set photos reveals Sam in his civilian clothes while filming the upcoming series. Shared on Twitter by Marvel fan account with the handle BRMarvelNews, the images feature the character shooting a scene in a public place with the Falcon seemingly waiting for someone. It’s hard to gauge what’s happening in the scene since there’s no context with these images. Fans know that aside from having his own Captain America suit, Sam is also getting an updated Falcon costume which looks more comic book-accurate. Given what’s been revealed about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier thus far, chances are that it’ll be a process before Sam can actually assume the position left by Steve. Previously reported plot details for the show that the U.S. Government is against the idea of Sam being Captain America and carrying the iconic shield. While Marvel Studios has yet to comment on this, the involvement of U.S. Agent backs up this idea.
Assuming that this is the case, Marvel Studios is giving Sam the opportunity to actually earn the Captain America mantle. While Steve did explain why he chose him as his successor, it would be a process for the public to dissociate the mantle from the First Avenger. His 2011 origin story established well why he’s worthy of the super soldier serum, and throughout the course of his journey in the MCU, fans got more and more convinced that Steve was indeed Captain America. Sam needs the same chance to earn people’s support as the superhero, and by seeing him go through his own hero’s trial and tribulations in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, chances are that by the end of it all, the public is all behind his new iteration of the character.
