The New Mutants was recently screened for the cast of the long-delayed movie. As the final movie in Fox’s long-running X-Men franchise, the journey The New Mutants has taken to the big screen has been a tumultuous one. Indeed, in its long, winding road to its eventual release, it has become something of an artifact of superhero movie folklore.

The New Mutants was originally set to debut on cinema screens on April 13th, 2018. However, the movie would experience a virtually unheard of series of delays in its release date, which were seemingly compounded by the Fox-Disney merger and the failure of last summer’s Dark Phoenix. Chatter would also circulate of the movie forgoing a theatrical release completely and making its debut on Hulu, before The New Mutants was finally slated to be released on April 3rd of this year.

Director Josh Boone has released an image on Instagram of the cast of The New Mutants in a private screening room, along with the caption “Screening New Mutants for the cast! All mutants in attendance. #newmutants”. This will doubtlessly come as very welcome news to all who have been eager to see The New Mutants finally hit theaters. Even after the movie planted its flag in its current release date, both the media and moviegoers around the world were still left wondering if another delay was on the horizon, but thankfully, that fear now seems to be no more.

The New Mutants also represents a major turning point for the franchise. Following Fox’s merger with Disney, all previously Fox-owned Marvel properties are set to be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, that inevitability has also led to some confusion over whether The New Mutants will be the first X-Men movie set within the MCU, despite that not being the case.

Regardless, with the X-Men set to debut in the MCU at some point in the future, along with the Fantastic Four and, per Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool, The New Mutants will mark the end of an era for the X-Men series as it began in 2000. However, its numerous delays have arguably made its release into that much bigger of a deal. It certainly isn’t unheard of for major comic book movies to experience developmental hurdles or rescheduling on the release calendar, but the challenges The New Mutants has experienced in seeing the light of day are truly in a class of their own.

Fortunately, the movie actually being screened for the cast signals that the many delays in the arrival of The New Mutants are finally at an end. What the future holds for the X-Men within the MCU is something that remains to be seen. However, moviegoers eager for one last entry in the Fox-era X-Men movies can now take comfort in the fact that The New Mutants seems to finally be set to make its grand debut at last.
