Disney and Fox’s The New Mutants movie trailer is released. The film is a spinoff from Fox’s main X-Men franchise, directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee (Kidnap). Based on the Marvel comics of the same name, The New Mutants follows five young mutants who must escape the facility where they’re being held. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball and Blu Hunt as Mirage. The original first New Mutants movie trailer released in October 2017, but the film has since been delayed multiple times, partly because Fox wanted to schedule reshoots.

The movie was also affected by the Disney-Fox deal that saw the Mouse House acquire the latter’s film and TV assets. With New Mutants now under the purview of Disney, there have been rumors and speculation about what will become of the final Fox X-Men movie and whether those reshoots would be scheduled and filmed. Some rumors pointed to Disney releasing The New Mutants on Hulu, forgoing a theatrical release. However, New Mutants’ April 2020 release date remains unchanged by Disney and now the studio has officially begun its marketing push for the X-Men spinoff.

Disney and Fox release The New Mutants movie trailer, which can be found below. Boone has been hyping the release of the official New Mutants trailer since last month, revealing the film will be his original vision, which indicates the production has not done the reshoots Fox originally wanted.

Although this New Mutants trailer features a great deal of new footage from the movie, the tone seems to fall in line with the initial teaser trailer that released two years ago. That said, there’s a greater emphasis placed on the characters’ powers, with glimpses of Magik’s sword, as well as brief shots of Sunspot and Cannonball using their abilities. The trailer even ends with Magik dropping through a portal with her sword to battle facing off against New Mutants villain Demon Bear. Altogether, it’s a well-cut trailer, teasing the Blumhouse-like horror vibes of the X-Men movie, while also showcasing the mutants’ powers.

Still, it remains to be seen how New Mutants will fare when it hits theaters. The long-delayed film is the final Fox X-Men movie and though Boone may have envisioned it as the first in a trilogy, it seems unlikely that will happen no matter how successful New Mutants turns out to be. After all, Dark Phoenix was a major flop at the box office, and some attribute it to Disney not marketing the movie very well. It would make sense for New Mutants to receive a similar push, which means there may not be a lot of awareness when it finally hits theaters in April. However, if New Mutants has a lower budget than Dark Phoenix’s $200 million, it will have a much lower bar to reach to be successful, so it’s still possible.

For now, it’s unclear whether New Mutants will be another flop to end Fox’s X-Men movie franchise or if it turns out to be a surprising success. Fans will get to see The New Mutants for themselves when it releases in theaters in early April.
