Pokémon Sword & Shield will be receiving another Mythical Pokémon in the future, as The Pokémon Company intends to unveil it during the upcoming Pokémon Day celebrations. Pokémon Day is held on February 27 and it’s an annual celebration of the release of Pokémon Red & Green in Japan.

Game Freak recently announced two expansions for Pokémon Sword & Shield in the form of the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. These expansions will add several new Legendary Pokémon in the form of Kubfu, Urshifu, and Calyrex. The trailer for the new expansions also showed images that suggested that the Legendary Birds of Kanto would receive Galarian forms and that there could be new Regi Legendary Pokémon that use different types.

It seems that there will be more Pokémon added in Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra than fans realized. The official Japanese Pokémon website has confirmed that a new Mythical Pokémon will be revealed on Pokémon Day and that it will appear in both Pokémon Sword & Shield and the upcoming Pokémon movie.

The difference between a Legendary and Mythical Pokémon is how they are acquired. Legendary Pokémon can be caught in-game and may only be tied to specific games in each generation, while Mythical Pokémon can only be acquired through special events. This means that Pokémon like Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi are considered to be Mythical Pokémon, but Mewtwo, Lugia, and Kyogre are not. How this will work in regards to Pokémon Sword & Shield is unclear, but it’s likely that the new Mythical Pokémon will be sent out via Mystery Gift or will appear in a Max Raid Battle.

The Pokémon Company saves some of its biggest announcements for Pokémon Day, as it was during the 2019 celebrations that Pokémon Sword & Shield were revealed to the world. There is still a lot we don’t know about the Pokémon Sword & Shield expansions and the first one isn’t due to be released until the summer, so there is plenty of time for Game Freak to reveal new content that will make fans who are still on the fence (following the National Dex controversy) excited to play the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.
