The Saw movies, which come from Lionsgate Films and Twisted Pictures, center around the Jigsaw Killer and game-like traps that test different characters and that entertain fans in an intense way. This franchise started in 2004, with Saw, and seven more flicks followed, including Jigsaw from 2017.

This year, a new installment will be coming out, full of even more thrills. Down below, readers can find out five things that are known about this new movie so far, such as the stars and the release date, as well as five hopes we have for it since it has a lot to live up to, based on the popularity of the past Saw stories!

Know: Its Story Is By Chris Rock

This ninth Saw movie is being directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, while the screenplay came from Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, and it is all based on a story from Chris Rock. Rock met the head of Lionsgate at a wedding, which got him thinking about working on a horror project… with some funny parts, of course.

He is also serving as an executive producer on this film.  According to Variety, Rock has always been a fan of this franchise, and he is looking forward to taking it to a “really intense and twisted new place”. Sounds good to us!

Hope: It Is Not Too Much Of A Comedy

These films are known for their bloody scenes, and even some fans of the horror genre are not fans of Saw; it can be a lot to handle! Therefore, we are wondering how many comedy scenes Chris Rock will incorporate into this new film.

A few funny lines are fine and can even make a project more successful, especially when coming from such a well-known comedian. However, this doesn’t need to come across as something similar to Scary Movie. We shall see, though.

Know: It Stars Chris Rock & Samuel L. Jackson

Past installments in this franchise have featured actors and actresses such as Donnie Wahlberg, Beverley Mitchell, Scott Patterson, Cary Elwes, Shawnee Smith, and Tobin Bell.

This one will star Chris Rock (from Everybody Hates Chris) as Zeke, Samuel L. Jackson (from the Marvel movies) as Marcus, Max Minghella (from The Social Network) as William Schenk and Marisol Nichols (from Riverdale) as Angie Garza. It will be awesome to see these stars in this capacity!

Hope: It Has Other Familiar Faces

A Saw movie without Tobin Bell feels strange. Furthermore, Shawnee Smith was Amanda in Saw, Saw II, Saw III, and Saw VI. Scott Patterson was Agent Strahm in Saw IV, Saw V and Saw VI. Even Cary Elwes reprised his role as Dr. Gordon in Saw: The Final Chapter.

And we know this is a whole new story from a whole new star (comedian Chris Rock)… but we just wonder if we will see any other familiar faces. Perhaps we will, simply in a flashback, maybe via a photo in a newspaper or at least as an extra, as Josh Stolberg (who will be discussed down below) is in this film as a police officer.

Know: It Will Honor The Franchise In A New & Exciting Way

Many who have worked on past Saw movies are part of this project, too, including Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (who wrote Jigsaw); Darren Lynn Bousman (who formerly directed); Mark Burg and Oren Koules (who are serving as producers); and James Wan and Leigh Whannell (who originally created Saw and who are now executive producers).

According to the chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, Joe Drake, this new idea is “reverential to the legacy of the material”, but it will also be “reinvigorating the brand”. We can’t wait to see the finished product!

Hope: It Does Just That

Film critics and fans can judge new releases harshly, but a big part of that is because we are used to things being a certain way and don’t like to see too much change… or too much stay the same.

That being said, we really do hope that this ninth installment is full of all the gory elements and that it does it all in an innovative way! The fact that eight films have already been released and each featured different plots and traps is impressive on its own.

Know: It Will Be In The Same Canon As The Other Saw Films

Another known fact about this film is that it will be in the same canon as the others, so it will not be a reboot of the first installment or a sequel to the last installment.

It is the day and age of reboots and revivals, so it is interesting to see continuations, especially in the horror genre; for instance, classics such as Halloween and Child’s Play have been remade, and this fact makes us even more anxious to see where the Saw story will go.

Hope: It Ties In & Sets Up

A lot has happened within this franchise and based on the twists and turns that have been revealed, it sort of seems like the story could go on forever; new people will just take over the game, creating even more excitement for audiences!

When it comes to Chris Rock’s Saw flick, we hope there are moments that tie into past scenes (as it is more of a continuation and not a reboot or sequel), and we hope there is an ending that sets up the potential for even more installments… because we can’t get enough!

Know: It Will Release On May 15

Filming began last summer in Toronto, and it wrapped at the end of August of that year. The movie was going to come out on October 23, 2020, but Halloween Kills, a sequel to Halloween from 2018, is coming out around that time. Therefore, this Saw flick will release on May 15, 2020. Mark those calendars!

It should also be noted that this has been under the working title of The Organ Donor, but recently, news came out that this movie will actually be called Spiral: From The Book Of Saw. That adds even more intrigue to this project

Hope: It Is A Success

And here is our final hope, which is our wish with any new piece: We want it to be successful. Has everyone liked every Saw movie that has been released? No. Will everyone be 100 percent pleased with this one?

Probably not. But for true fans of the franchise and for those who are just discovering it (perhaps due to the allure of Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson), we hope it is a real winner.
