Wolverine doesn’t mess around when it comes to facing off against some of the toughest Marvel characters. He’s gone head-to-head against Sabretooth, Magento, and perhaps most famously, The Hulk. His next fight will see him taking on one of his biggest opponents yet again: Sentinels.

Sentinels have proven to be a formidable foe against the X-Men. First appearing in X-Men #14 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Sentinels are created by supervillain Bolivar Trask. He sees the mutants as a threat and creates the giant robots specifically designed to eliminate mutants. In Uncanny X-Men #141, Sentinels rule a dystopian future where Mutants are imprisoned. Sentinels have been more than just a thorn in the side of X-Men since their inception, they’ve been one of their biggest threats.

Wolverine will be getting his own Dawn of X spinoff in 2020 from Wolverine - The Long Night writer Benjamin Percy with art from Adam Kubert. The series will see Wolverine become the protector of the mutant nation of Krakoa. In a variant cover for Wolverine #1 by JeeHyung Lee (courtesy of QuixoticComics), Wolverine is shown lunging into the face off a Sentinel with his claws out. Wolverine isn’t messing around.

Like the X-Men’s Marauders, Wolverine knows how to make an entrance. Wolverine has had a lot of great covers, but Lee’s easily enters the pantheon among the coolest concepts we’ve seen in years. The image perfectly encapsulates what Wolverine is all about. He’s a violent hero who isn’t afraid of anything, which means that taking on a Sentinel might be a tall order for some other X-Men… but Wolverine is always ready to fight. Considering his history, counting him out would be a big mistake.

Sentinels played a pretty big part in the Powers of X/Dawn of X lead up to the current X-Men run. Since the series ended and the spinoffs and main title launched, Sentinels haven’t been seen or heard from. Reintroducing them in a new series makes a ton of sense. Wolverine needs a villain with some staying power and taking down Sentinels while protecting Krakoa isn’t exactly easy. Defending Krakoa won’t be an easy task - even for one of Marvel’s best fighters, especially if Sentinels are involved. However, by the looks of this awesome variant cover by Lee, Wolverine is clearly up for the challenge. Wolverine #1 hits physical and digital comic shops in February, 2020.
