This morning Nest has released a brand new version of its mobile app which comes along with a handful of new tricks for Nest Cam owners. The most notable new feature comes with a Nest Aware subscription, and that’s the addition of door detection. With this latest app update, a Nest Cam will automatically detect doors in its line of sight and set an Activity Zone over that area. That allows users to set up notifications specific to those doors when they are opened, such as “There was motion at the front door....

A new, vague, report from Digitimes says that Apple is planning a new addition to the MacBook line for launch in the second half of the year. Described as a ’13-inch entry-level MacBook’, it sounds like a successor to the MacBook Air. It’s fair to say that the MacBook Air line has been left to stagnate. Whilst this doesn’t sound like a new Air, it could wholly replace the Air lineup with something new....

ComputerWorld notes that if the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro benchmarks anywhere close to its claimed SSD performance, it will offer the fastest drive read and write speeds of any stock computer available – and that Apple is around two years ahead of most of its competition. Computerworld‘s own benchmark tests with Blackmagic software on a 2015 13-in. MacBook Pro with Retina display revealed it could pin the needle at more than 1....

A series of Fear the Walking Dead season 5 photos released by AMC hint that the forthcoming season of the show is set to be action-packed, exciting and just a tad gory. The new images arrive just a few weeks ahead of Fear the Walking Dead’s highly anticipated season 5 premiere on Sunday June 2 when the apocalypse spin-off show will return and fill the zombie-shaped void left in fans’ lives after the conclusion of season 9 of its parent show, The Walking Dead....

Universal Pictures has released a brand new motion comic, detailing the events that happen after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Similar to Colin Trevorrow’s short film Battle of Big Rock, this comic provides a new look at the new world where dinosaurs roam free among us. In Fallen Kingdom, the captured dinosaurs on the mainland escape their cages, running amok in our world. The film ends with moments of impending danger such as Pteranodons in Vegas, A T-rex facing a lion at the zoo, and Blue the raptor looking over a suburban neighborhood....

As Apple’s battle with the FBI drags on this week, a judge in New York has added a new wrinkle to the case. A magistrate judge in New York today has ruled that the government, using the All Writs Act, cannot force Apple to unlock an iPhone. This specific case this judge presides over is a drug trafficking investigation, which was mentioned last week as one of the more than a dozen other cases in which the government is asking Apple to help it obtain data from a locked iPhone....

Netflix plans to soon change its current review system from traditional 1-5 star ratings to instead only allow users to like or dislike a film or TV show, but is it the right move? The company’s reasoning is that the old 1-5 star ratings weren’t relevant to how popular content was necessarily, with users giving lower ratings to films they might deem of lesser quality (which is sort of the point of the star ratings) even if they are watching it more often than content they rate higher and watch less frequently:...

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith’s new universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, called Broadcasts, is out this week. The app is a new version of his app HCC Radio, which allows users to listen to radio stations on the go now across all three platforms. Troughton-Smith offered some detail on the development process in a blog post. Broadcasts was built from the ground up using Apple’s Catalyst platform — but unlike most Catalyst apps, it was designed first for the Mac, then brought to the iPad and iPhone....

This week, Apple will rollout an interesting new perk called “App Discovery” to its retail store employees. According to several sources who participated in quarterly meetings, in which the details were announced, Apple retail employees will have free access to a catalogue of popular paid App Store applications. It is possible that this is a holiday perk for employees that will not remain in place forever. For instance, if an Apple retail employee, starting this week, wants to download Fruit Ninja for their own iPhone, they will be able to use an Apple provided redemption code to get the application at no cost....

This week, Netflix continues preparing its users for the Christmas season, balancing it with the help of a mystery film and the third season of a British drama. The streaming wars are heating up now that the (supposed) biggest threat in the world of streaming has officially launched: Disney+. Although the Mouse House is bringing a lot of content, mostly appealing to nostalgia, Netflix continues with its “weekly content” formula with both licensed and original content....

Some interesting news from Netflix this morning: They are spinning off their by mail group, which will also include video games and giving it a new name ‘Qwikster’. One of the major security enhancements Apple has brought to its devices over the years is the Secure Enclave chip, which encrypts and protects all sensitive data stored on the devices. Last month, however, hackers claimed they found a permanent vulnerability in the Secure Enclave, which could put data from iPhone, iPad, and even Mac users at risk. What is Secure Enclave? Superhero horror movie The New Mutants is set to be the final entry into Fox’s X-Men line, and draws inspiration from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3. It’s been a long strange trip for X-Men movies, beginning with director Bryan Singer’s original film released back in 2000. Fox would go on to produce twelve films in total, with New Mutants appropriately set to be the thirteenth. Among those titles were three Wolverine standalones, two R-rated Deadpool movies, and several attempts to try and fix what had become rather broken continuity....

Jonathan Hickman’s reboot of the X-Men has certainly broken new ground with its bold new direction, but new sales data reveals another unexpected development: the recently relaunched New Mutants, also written by Hickman, is the top-selling book of November. The New Mutants first debuted in their eponymous series in 1982, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. The team consisted of teenaged mutants studying at Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and included the likes of Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane....

Netatmo, maker of the hyperlocal Weather Station, announced today that its Smart Thermostat and new Smart Radiator Valves officially support Apple’s HomeKit feature. The company highlights providing “the only complete heating solution in Europe that’s compatible with Apple HomeKit.” Netatmo’s Smart Thermostat lets you control your HVAC system from your iPhone or with Siri, and the new Smart Valves apply the same concept to room-by-room heating radiators by replacing standard knobs....
