Network upfronts will begin next week, but before the likes of ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and The CW peddle their various new and returning wares to potential advertisers, there must come the annual culling of the proverbial herd. As such, dozens of shows that were on the bubble (and some that weren’t) have been officially canceled, making room for all the new programs headed to TV this fall. Most of the cancellations so far aren’t too surprising, with FOX giving the troubled Lethal Weapon the ax after three seasons....

The upcoming Star Trek film and two more television shows have been confirmed as in development. The beloved sci-fi franchise returned to television in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery after taking a twelve-year hiatus. Before the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek’s revival was limited to the big screen courtesy of movies set within J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline. While the first film and Star Trek Into Darkness did well, Star Trek Beyond underperformed; that, compiled with failed contract negotiations left a fourth film’s fate lost in space....

Netflix’s Daybreak is a series about a post-apocalyptic world where everyone under the age of 18 rules, and adults are all puddles of drool thanks to global biological annihilation. There are unmistakable commonalities between Daybreak and other dystopian fares such as The Walking Dead or the Mad Max movies, but Daybreak puts its own meta spin on the end of times. The result is as if John Hughes and George Romero had a lovechild....

Netflix releases the trailer for Good Sam. Directed by Kate Melville, the good samaritan mystery stars Tiya Sircar. In Lucasfilm Animation’s Disney series Star Wars Forces of Destiny, Sircar has a main voice role as Sabine Wren, and she also has a main voice role in DreamWorks’ computer-animated Netflix series Spirit Riding Free. Set in New York City, Good Sam follows reporter Kate Bradley (Sircar). When a mystery person begins leaving $100,000 on doorsteps throughout the five boroughs, the protagonist attempts to connect the dots, even if she’s not entirely interested in the story itself....

App analytics company App Annie is today out with its newest report, a retrospective look back at the industry during 2016. The report claims that the total number of app downloads, across both Android and iOS, increased to over 90 billion during the year, an increase of 13 billion compared to downloads during 2015. While App Annie doesn’t offer split data for the iOS App Store and Play Store, downloads from Apple’s storefront increased more in 2016 than they did in 2015....

New artwork for Final Fantasy VII Remake was released on Twitter that shows off the game’s amazing new visuals. Fans have been preparing for the release of this remake for several years – namely, ever since it was announced during the 2015 E3. The original version of the game released back in 1997 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made. Final Fantasy VII Remake will follow the storyline of the original title....

Iron Man 2 behind-the-scenes images reveal an unused battle suit for Tony Stark. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film was Robert Downey Jr.’s second go as the genius, billionaire-turned-superhero. The film may have not been a critical hit like the first Iron Man, but it did have some cool moments - most of which involved the title character suiting up for a mission/fight. Much has happened to the MCU and Stark since Iron Man 2....

While Netflix itself classes Horse Girl as a “mind-bending drama”, the psychological exploration of a young woman’s struggle with mental health also easily falls into the horror genre. Horse Girl follows Sarah (Alison Brie), an eccentric but sweet young woman with a strong affection for horses, as she undergoes struggles with mental illness. The trailers for Horse Girl certainly frame the piece like a horror movie, using disorienting shots and ominous music to portend Sarah’s deterioration....

Apple has finally launched the successor of AirPods, which are currently the world’s most popular wireless earphones. Some people are also calling them as Airpods 2. According to Apple, the new AirPods offer 50 per cent more talk time than its predecessor. They’re powered by a new H1 chipset and even support hands-free “Hey Siri”. Optional wireless charging is also available. The new H1 chip supports Bluetooth 5 and is specially designed by Apple for earphones....

HomeKit-connected accessories have gradually become more affordable and plentiful since the technology was first introduced, but there’s still room for improvement. Looking to remedy some of the problems with Apple’s connected home platform, Silicon Labs is today announcing a new initiative that it hopes will make it both cheaper and easier for developers to create HomeKit accessories. The solution introduced by Silicon Labs consists of two primary parts: custom software that has been pre-tested and approved by Apple and a Bluetooth-capable hardware module....

More rumors of Apple’s next-generation iPad and iPhones have hit the web today. TechCrunch added further credence to rumors of a gold iPhone 5S shipping along with the usual black and white models after photos what appears to be the back shell of that device leaked earlier this week. Earlier this week iMore noted that it would not be difficult for Apple to create a gold iPhone 5S, but that the decision against it may have previously been a commercial issue....

Two new reports today from publications with mixed track records claim to share details of Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup including the much rumored 4-inch iPhone “6c” and plans for the company to bring waterproofing and other new hardware features to future iPhone models. The first report comes from Chinese blog MyDrivers and claims to have more specs for an upcoming 4-inch iPhone 6c courtesy of what they call reliable supply chain sources....

Netflix releases a trailer for The Highwaymen, in which Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson hunt down two of America’s most infamous criminals, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. The crime drama examines the perspectives of two real-life Texas Rangers, while paying less attention to the Depression-era antagonists who killed at least nine police officers and four civilians while robbing banks throughout the United States. In 1967, Arthur Penn released the film Bonnie and Clyde, which helped kick off the New Hollywood movement and further glamorized Parker and Barrow....

This past weekend, we highlighted a couple of screenshots from a hacked version of the iOS 7 simulator that supports the iPad, and we also provided some steps to tweak the simulator yourself. Now, @SonnyDickson has sent in several new screenshots that show potential Maps, Settings, Newsstand, Contacts, Safari, Game Center, Control Center, and Notification Center interfaces for the iPad running iOS 7. The successful launch of The Umbrella Academy proves that Netflix doesn’t need its Marvel TV shows anymore, explaining why Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, The Defenders and The Punisher were all cancelled. The Umbrella Academy season 1 premiered on Netflix Friday, Feb. 15, less than a full month after the streamer rolled out The Punisher season 2. The former marks the beginning of what can be a successful property for Netflix, while the latter is the second to last season to hit the streaming service as part of its original deal with Marvel TV....

Netflix’s documentary series Cheer follows the Navarro College Cheer Team through an intense, emotional, and occasionally bone-breaking season of preparation for the NCA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida. After the triumph of their win, fans of the show will no doubt be keen for an update on where the cheerleaders are now. There are 40 cheerleaders in total on the Navarro team, with 20 “on-mat” for the competition. However, Cheer focuses on just a few team members, who came from difficult backgrounds but found purpose under the tutelage of Navarro coach Monica Aldama....

In 2017, Netflix came out with a live-action remake of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s popular anime series Death Note, directed by Adam Wingard. This time around, the story of the murder notebook takes place in Seattle, where bullied high schooler Light Turner (Nat Wolff) finds this notebook and resolves to rid the world of criminals once and for all.
