The New York Times announced today that it is launching a new HTML5-based web app accessible to iPad users at app.nytimes.com. While called an “experimental web app” in the press release, the move mirrors a switch by other publications such as the Financial Times, which released a HTML5 web app last year in response to Apple’s subscription guidelines. The New York Times also already has a similar HTML5 app available in the Chrome Web Store....

The New York Times said earlier this week that it had declined to join the upcoming Apple News subscription service. The Washington Post has reportedly made the same decision. Mac users should beware of some new malware spreading, that tries to connect infected machines with a botnet for future exploitation. As detected by Dr Web, the malicious worm (dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm) first checks whether any interfering applications are installed on the Mac. If it is clear, it calls out to Reddit posts to find the IP addresses of possible servers to callback too. Although these posts have been deleted, it’s not hard for the people behind the exploit to repost them at a later time....

Netflix today reported its second quarter earnings for 2019, and has subsequently dropped over 10 percent in after-hours trading.
